Costa Brasil expands multimodal operations eyeing Northeast market

Costa Brasil, a Brazilian multimodal logistics integrator, is expanding its operations to the country’s Northeast after establishing itself in the North (Manaus) and South and Southeast regions. With experience combining land, sea, and air transportation modes, Costa Brasil will offer all the services provided in Manaus to Ceará and Pernambuco, including containerized cargo transport.

According to Roberto Veiga, Commercial Director, “The Northeast has a solid consumer market, with a much larger population than the North and consequently a much greater consumption. There is a huge demand for goods. Costa Brasil already moves some cargoes on regular weekly routes in cabotage, with stops at the ports of Pecém and Suape. There is a significant flow of goods from the South and Southeast to the Northeast. We are going after this market share.”

Costa Brasil is located near important port terminals in the cities of Santos, Cubatão, and Guarulhos in the state of São Paulo, Itajaí in Santa Catarina, and Manaus in the Amazonas. The company owns its warehouses for receiving cargo, handling, packaging, container stuffing, and dispatch. It can use air, road, or cabotage transport with end-to-end logistics.

The expansion plan of Costa Brasil focuses on cabotage, relying on maritime transportation of fractional cargo in containers. “The cabotage sector lacked a type of service that served small companies that did not have large volumes or did not have the expertise on how to use coastal shipping. For some, cabotage could even come across as something a little unusual. When looking at a ship with containers, it was scary. However, with its infrastructure, Costa Brasil created facilities and made the process viable,” said Márcio Salmi, CEO of Costa Brasil.

Fractional cargo is characterized by delivering goods in small quantities that do not fill the entire container. This mode allows the unification of cargo from various suppliers to various receivers, reducing the cost of transportation for the customer.

Another modality is the shared cargo service, which is the collection and delivery of different quantities of products without the need to fill a container. It is ideal for unifying heavy or light loads to maximize container space. It is usually used by clients with insufficient volume to have their exclusive container. Finally, Costa Brasil also offers consolidated cargo service, a set of goods from various suppliers that need to be delivered to the same location and can be grouped as a single object or volume.
