Port of Imbituba celebrates historic four-month period

The handling of 767.8 thousand tonnes in April guaranteed the Port of Imbituba the best monthly result ever achieved in the port complex and the end of a historic first four months. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes were handled from January to April, which means a 6% increase in tonnage compared to last year and the largest expansion ever recorded for the period. Since the beginning of the year, the Port has received 101 ships, an 8.6% growth in the number of vessels handled compared to January-April 2022.

From January to April, most of the cargoes that passed through the Port of Imbituba, 83.4%, were of the dry bulk type, mainly petroleum coke, corn and soybean meal, salt, corn, and bituminous coal. The lead of the bulk carriers was boosted by the movement of agricultural grains, which presented an increase of approximately 200% in relation to the 1st four months of last year. Nevertheless, mineral bulks maintained the lead as the main group of products transported at the Port, despite the reduction of 22.5% in the amount of cargo operated.

“After achieving record performances for February and March, the Port of Imbituba breaks the historical mark reached almost two years ago, the result of the joint efforts of the entire port community that, combined with the strategic look the State Government has applied to logistics in Santa Catarina, increasingly reinforces the port as a tool for economic progress and social development,” says the CEO of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba, Luís Antonio Braga Martins. The previous monthly record was in July 2021, with the operation of 717.8 thousand tonnes.

Container cabotage, which is what weekly docks at Imbituba, performed practically the same result as in 2022 in terms of tonnage, with a 10.7% share of total cargo, representing the third busiest cargo.

As for general cargoes, these represented 5.7% of the total products handled but registered a drop of 42.5% in tonnage due to the decrease in the export volume of wood logs and also the non-handling of steel products, if compared to the portfolio held last year. “These variations are common when it comes to a multipurpose port, that is, characterized by handling different types of cargo. In this growth curve of the demand for the use of the Port, the non-handling of a cargo tends to increase the operation of another type of product,” explains José João Tavares, Director of Infrastructure and Operations at the Port.

The Port Authority expects the Port to reach a new record this year, with estimated handling of approximately 7.4 million tonnes.
