Rio Grande Port grows more than 6% year-to-date

More than 13 million tonnes: this is the total amount of cargo handled at the ports of Rio Grande do Sul over the first four months of 2023. The results were released on Monday (15) by the statistics sector of the Planning and Development Management of Portos RS.

A good part of this number, i.e., 12,729,820 tonnes, was handled only at the public wharf and the Rio Grande port complex. The Rio Grande Port had a positive variation of 6.03% compared to the same period last year.

This result also boosted the growth of the Rio Grande do Sul ports in general, which increased 5.48% compared to 2022 and 6.53% compared to 2021, the year with the largest movements in history. Of the 1,273 ships received in the three units of the Public Company, 1,046 of them were destined for the Rio Grande Port.

Dry bulk leads the handling in Rio Grande, with 7,746,016 tonnes. General cargo comes next, with 3,667,482 tonnes, and dry bulk, with 1,316,322 tonnes. Among the goods with an increase are soybeans in grain (79.22%), phosphate (79.21%), rice (8.27%), and potassium chloride (7.38%).

As for container movements, there were 112,897 full units and another 77,855 empty, totaling 190,842. The variation, in relation to the same period last year, was 9.75%. The month with the biggest movement in 2023 was March, when 51,595 containers circulated full and empty through the complex.

The ranking of import origins is led by Argentina and followed by China, Canada, Morocco, Russia, the United States, Algeria, Peru, Saudi Arabia, and Germany. Exports are destined for China, followed by Indonesia, Vietnam, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Morocco, Spain, Bangladesh, and South Korea.

Port of Pelotas

In Pelotas, the movement of clinker and wood logs reached 425,535 tonnes. Of this number, 366,796 tonnes were of wood logs destined for the CMPC plant in Guaíba for pulp processing. Clinker, considered cement in its raw manufacturing phase, reached 58,739 tons handled.

Port of Porto Alegre

At the Port of Porto Alegre, the movement of fertilizers reached 181,940 tons. Followed by barley, with 36,854 tons, bovine tallow, with 22,807 tonnes, wheat, with 7,703 tonnes, and general loose goods, with 219 tonnes. In total, the movements in the capital city of the southernmost state of Brazil reached 249,523 tonnes.

The imports come from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, China, Israel, Morocco, Russia, and Venezuela.
