Brazil exported 197.5 thousand tonnes of rice in May

The paddy rice market in Rio Grande do Sul is currently experiencing low liquidity, posing challenges for market players. Researchers from Cepea, the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics, highlight that most producers are cautious, opting to hold onto their rice rather than sell it. This stance reflects that current prices fail to cover the high production costs, further limiting trading to specific batches of rice.
Cepea’s report reveals that, on the international front, both rice exports and imports (in terms of paddy rice equivalent) remained steady throughout May.
The chart below shows Brazil’s exports of rice (HS code 1006) between Jan 2019 and Apr 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

This volume also surpasses the 39.69 thousand tons exported in May 2022. In contrast, rice imports totaled 127.8 thousand tons in May, reflecting a 13% increase from the previous month and a 24% rise compared to May 2022.
