Port activity in Porto Velho has experienced a significant surge, with a 77% increase in cargo volume during the first four months of this year. The port’s management released the balance sheet report last Friday (16) with these findings.
The report reveals that between January and April of this year, the port at the Rondônia capital had a nearly 752,000 tonnes cargo throughput compared to 424,000 tonnes during the same period last year.
The transportation of soy, vehicles, corn, sugar, and wooden containers constituted the majority of the cargo handled in the first four months of the year. The port administration highlights that these products have contributed to the overall increase in port activity numbers, demonstrating the importance of these sectors for the region.
March emerged as the busiest month in terms of cargo volume, with 234,016 tonnes, followed by April, with 203,910 tonnes.
The Society of Ports and Waterways of the State of Rondônia (Soph) underscored the significant growth recorded in 2023, nearly double the previous year’s figures.
Soph emphasizes the benefits of cargo transport, which stimulates trade and contributes to the region’s development. To meet the high demand, the port has invested in improving its infrastructure and modernizing its equipment.
The Government of Rondônia reports that the construction of the new headquarters is nearing completion and is currently in the final stages and structuring phase.
The dock renovation project is currently in the bidding phase, including measures to enhance operational efficiency and facilitate cargo flow.
