Arco Norte is the best option to sell 19% of MT production

Three years after the completion of the BR-163 highway, Arco Norte has established itself as the best alternative for crop transportation for properties and companies located in the north of Mato Grosso.
A study by the Research and Extension Group in Agroindustrial Logistics at the “Luiz de Queiroz” School of Agriculture (EsalqLog ) shows that this means that 19% of the state’s production has a financial advantage to send the grains via the ports of Itaqui (MA), Barcarena (PA), Santarém (PA) or Itacoatiara (AM) in any season.
Meanwhile, for a portion of 57% of production, located in the central region of the State, the freight values of each week are what define which port is more competitive. The southern region of Mato Grosso, where 24% of production is located, always has the advantage of sending soybeans and corn to Santos (SP) and Paranaguá (PR).
According to the study group, for the city of Sorriso, for example, which is located in the center of the state, there are times when the difference between north and south reaches 10%. In the first half of the month, freight to take corn from Sorriso to Arco Norte was R$432 per ton, while for Santos it was R$496 per ton. This means that the logistical cost of transporting via Arco-Norte was 87% of what it would cost to Santos.
EsalqLog turned this into a logistical differential indicator. If the number is less than 1, transportation through the Arco Norte ports is more advantageous. If it is above 1, the most advantageous is south. Between 0.9 and 1.1 the best route is not defined.
“Arco Norte needs to be more competitive, and for that, it still has a lot to improve in terms of drainage roads. It would be even better if the railroad would get there”, comments EsalqLog coordinator Thiago Péra.
New outflow routes
Ferrogrão’s project foresees a line that connects Sinop to the port of Miritituba, in Itaituba (PA), in a 900-kilometer route practically parallel to BR-163. But a Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) indicates unconstitutional points, such as cutting environmental preservation areas by the railroad. The case is being processed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and does not yet have a date for judgment.
For the EsalqLog researcher, the expansion of private use terminals is also essential to guarantee the receipt of grains from the central region of Mato Grosso.
Routes heading south will be more advantageous when and if the Senador Vicente Emílio Vuolo railroad is ready, according to Pera. The project foresees connecting Rondonópolis, Lucas do Rio Verde and Cuiabá. Furthermore, the port of Santos would have to expand its grain reception capacity, currently at 8 million tons per month, in the researcher’s assessment.
In February, another study by Péra showed that, on average, a 10% increase in the volume of exports in Santos generates a 5% increase in the length of stay of ships in the port, in addition to increasing the volume of traffic on the highways by 1%. toll roads bound for the coast of São Paulo.
“The government needs to attract capital for long-term investment. This is always the issue for investment in logistics in the country, security is needed because the maturation period is long and the amounts dispensed are very high”, evaluates Péra.
