The Port of Suape, the sixth Brazilian public wharf in cargo handling, ended the first half of this year with a 5% growth in operations compared to the same period in 2022, totaling 12.1 million tons. The announcement was made by Governor Raquel Lyra during a meeting at the Suape Administrative Complex, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife.
“The growth in movement in Suape is yet another reaffirmation of the recovery of confidence in the business sector in Pernambuco. We had excellent numbers in the generation of jobs and, now, the increase in cargo handling at the port. We are working to attract new business, to allow our State to enter into a new economy”, highlighted Raquel Lyra, who was there accompanied by her deputy, Priscila Krause.
Suape recorded 768 ship dockings between January and June, a number 7% higher than the first six months of the previous year (718). The port’s gross revenue was more than R$ 148 million.
According to the CEO of Suape, Marcio Guiot, the progress of the port is linked to its strategic location, infrastructure and the use of new technologies, providing more speed in loading and unloading goods.
“Our position is privileged, not only in relation to the Northeast, but to all continents. We are close to major centers in Europe and the United States, and this has been a major factor in attracting new business,” he emphasized.
According to the Statistical Yearbook of the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq), bulk liquids and gases accounted for 71.1% (8,657,205 tons) of the half-yearly movement of the Port of Suape, followed by containerized cargo (22.3% and 2,714,329 t), solid bulk (4.4% and 532,528 t) and loose general cargo (2.2% and 271,950 t).
The long haul routes for liquid bulk connect the Pernambuco docks to different countries, such as Singapore, the United States, Ghana, the Netherlands, Turkey, Argentina, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, among others.
The vehicle hub, the largest in the North/Northeast, operates with export, import and transhipment operations. In the first half, it recorded an increase of 59%, with shipments/loads of 42,123 units of different brands and manufacturers.
