The total shipments of orange juice from Brazil (FCOJ equivalent to 66% solids per ton) registered a decrease of 17% in the period between July 2018 and May 2019, when compared to the same period of the previous harvest. In total, 870,311 tons of orange juice were exported, compared to 1.05m tons. In sales, exports totaled US$1.6m, 16% less than the previous harvest, when shipments totaled US$1.9m.

In the European Union, Brazil’s main market, exports of Brazilian orange juice totaled 559,953 tons, 6% less than in the 2017/2018 harvest, when the volume totaled 598,359 tons. Sales dropped 5%, adding up to US$1.03m against the US$1.08m made in the previous harvest.

Between July 2018 and May 2019, 190,680 tons were exported to the United States, a volume 38% lower than the 306,763 tons shipped in the previous harvest. There was a decrease of 39% in revenue: US$331.5m compared to US$544.9m in the 2017/2018 harvest. “As we previously reported, we are living in a time where we have combined the fall in consumption with the closing of a window of opportunity that that had come to us because of Hurricane Irma in 2017, therefore the end of a period when demand had shown some recovery, although in an artificial way” said the executive director of CitrusBR, Ibiapaba Netto.

In Japan, Brazilian orange juice exports totaled 45,601 tons, down 13% from 52,274 tons exported in the previous harvest, and sales fell by 12%. Shipments totaled US$88.6m, while the previous harvest totaled US$100.9m.

Exports to China also declined in this period. In this harvest, a total of 30,612 tons were shipped, 8% less than the volume exported in the previous harvest, 33,401 tons. There was a 9% drop in revenue, totaling US$61.3m against US$67.5m.

Concentrated Juice (FCOJ)

In the 2018/2019 harvest, FCOJ shipments totaled 615,156 tons to all destinations, down 23% from the 801,655 tons in the previous harvest. Revenue totaled US$1.14b, 21% less than the previous harvest when financial turnover was US$1.45bn.

The European Union imported 406,829 tons, 11% below imports from the same period last year, which totaled 455,042 tons. Revenue from Brazilian exports totaled US$756.8m, down 8% from US$822.8m.

FCOJ exports fell by 56% to 88,749 tons in the United States. In the previous harvest, Brazilian industries had exported 199,876 tons because of the disastrous consequences of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Sales also fell by 56% to US$150.1m from US$339.9m

Natural Dilution (NFC)

Exports of NFC (Not from Concentrate juice, equivalent to 66% of solid per ton, for statistical purposes) to all destinations increased in the period. Between July 2018 and May 2019, shipments of NFC increased 2%, from 250,588 tons in 2017/2018 to 255,155. NFC revenue, however, fell 2% to US$463.9m from US$471.5m. “Although we have seen a small increase in NFC exports, which is very good, we have seen a small devaluation of the price per ton, probably caused by the greater supply of orange in Florida and Brazil compared to the previous period,” says Netto.

In the European Union, NFC exports in the 2018/2019 harvest totaled 153,124 tons, 7% more than the 143,317 tons exported in the previous harvest. In revenue, the increase was 6%, with US$282.1m compared to US$265.8m.

Exports of NFC to the United States, however, fell by 5% to 101,931 tons. In the previous harvest, the volume of NFC shipments totaled 106,887 tons. Revenues fell 12% to US$181.2m.
