Brazilian coffee exports drop over 10% in 2023, points out Conab

Arabica and robusta coffee exports saw a 10.8% drop between January and August this year when compared to the same period in 2022, with a total volume of 22.9 million 60kg bags shipped, according to consolidated data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC) by the National Food Supply Company (Conab).

According to Conab’s third survey released on Wednesday (20/09), the negative performance in the year-to-date 2023 was influenced by limited stocks in the first months of the season due to the restricted production of the 2021/22 and 2022/23 crops.

Despite the reduction, coffee sales regained momentum in August, a month in which Brazil exported approximately 3.69 million 60kg bags. This marked a 38.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022, according to the MDIC.

“After a decline in the quantity of coffee exported in 2021 and 2022, the expansion of domestic supply in 2023 may result in a recovery in exports in the current crop. As seen in the last month of August, exports are expected to remain brisk in the coming months of this year,” explained Gabriel Rabello, Conab’s Manager of Fibers and Basic Foods.

For the organization, after the decrease in the quantity of coffee exported in 2021 and 2022, the expansion of domestic supply in 2023 may lead to a recovery in exports in the current crop, as exports are expected to remain robust in the coming months.

In the cumulative total for the first eight months of 2023, Brazil exported coffee to 143 countries, with the United States and Germany being the main destinations, accounting for 17% and 13.2% of the quantity, respectively.

Italy ranks third, accounting for 7.9% of Brazilian coffee purchases, followed by Belgium at 6.2% and Japan at 6.1%.

More than 74% of exported coffee was shipped through the Port of Santos, with 17% through the Port of Rio de Janeiro, the two primary exit points for the product.

The chart below shows Brazil’s coffee exports by the ports that most handled this type of cargo between 2019 and 2023. It should be noted that the data for 2023 only extends until July. The data is from DataLiner.

In the first eight months of the year, Brazilian coffee exports totaled US$4.9 billion, a drop of 16.4% compared to the same period last year. This reduction should impact the country’s results for the year.
