Brazilian poultry market reports 2% year-on-year increase in October

Brazilian poultry market exports grew by 2% in October compared to the same month last year, totaling 401.7 thousand tonnes. Such performance was driven by a 31% increase in sales to China, the leading destination for Brazilian chicken products.

In the year-to-date, Brazil’s chicken meat exports reached 4.307 million tonnes, a 6.1% increase. In terms of revenue, the growth was lower at 1.3%, amounting to $8.301 million.

For October, chicken meat exports generated $723.5 million in revenue, 12% less than the amount earned in the same period last year, $822.6 million.

Taking into account the first ten months of 2023, export revenue reached $8.301 million, a 1.3% increase compared to the total recorded last year, with $8.195 million.

Ricardo Santin, President of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), believes the October performance strengthened the entity’s projections for record shipments in 2023, exceeding 5 million tonnes.

“The export flow above 400 thousand tonnes in October backs ABPA’s projections for record shipments in 2023, exceeding 5 million tonnes, a trend that also brings positive expectations for the coming year,” said Santin.

China bought the most exports from the Brazilian poultry market in 2023, with 592.6 thousand tonnes (+31% compared to the same period the previous year), Saudi Arabia received 305 thousand tonnes (+5%), South Africa obtained 286 thousand tonnes (+25%), South Korea got 166.5 thousand tonnes (+9%), and Mexico received 155.6 thousand tonnes (+22%).

Paraná was the leading chicken meat exporter in Brazil in 2023, with 1.778 million tonnes, followed by Santa Catarina (903 thousand tonnes), Rio Grande do Sul (616.4 thousand tonnes), São Paulo (246.1 thousand tonnes), and Goiás (195.6 thousand tonnes).

Luis Rua, ABPA’s Markets Director, highlighted that the growth in Brazil’s chicken meat exports results from several factors, including the increasing demand from China, the opening of new markets, and the expansion of the number of establishments authorized to export to certain countries.

“In addition to China and other markets continuing to demand Brazilian products, this year, in addition to opening up four new markets and expanding the number of establishments authorized to export poultry to some countries, we have also recently seen the return of pre-listing for the United Kingdom and the formalization of the same mechanism for countries such as Chile and Cuba. This is expected to reflect in future shipments,” Rua emphasized.
