Argentina’s First 100% Sustainable Soy Meal Export Sets Sail to Spain

At the port of San Lorenzo, Santa Fe, a historic event unfolded as a ship set sail loaded with Argentina’s first export of 100% sustainable soy meal bound for Huelva, Spain. This achievement gains even more significance considering that the product originates from deforestation-free fields and complies with the new regulations of the European Union, which will come into effect for products entering the European market in mid-2025.
“We are very proud to be the first exporting company of sustainable soy meal in the country and to be able to offer a superior and value-added product to the global market,” expressed Vladimir Barisic, CEO of Viterra for Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, the company that conducted the operation.
In a statement, the multinational explained that this is soy meal from deforestation-free fields, with grains segregated and ground at the Renova plant in Timbúes, “ensuring traceability throughout the production chain.”
“The multinational is two years ahead of the new EU regulations and becomes a reference in sustainable agricultural production,” it noted. On June 29 of this year, a resolution from this economic bloc was approved, prohibiting the trade of beef, soy, cocoa, wood, coffee, palm, and derived products associated with deforestation and forest degradation.
The regulation will take effect on December 30, 2024, requiring imported products not to come from deforested areas after December 31, 2020, with an adaptation period for micro, small, and medium-sized European enterprises until May 30, 2025.
“We seek to develop solutions that contribute to environmental care and generate a positive impact in our communities. This is seen as a competitive advantage and, at the same time, reflects our commitment to a responsible and sustainable long-term business model,” Barisic added.
In this regard, it was noted that this year, the company achieved “another milestone in sustainability” by launching its carbon footprint measurement program, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and, consequently, contribute to climate change, fulfilling its commitment to zero carbon by 2050.
