Brazil’s Porto do Açu plans investments to dismantle oil platforms

Brazilian firm Porto do Açu plans to invest in infrastructure for dismantling oil and gas platforms, CEO José Firmo told BNamericas.
The idea is to build a specialized production line, where it is possible to move the platform as it is cut up, making room for additional units to be dismantled.
According to Firmo, the solution is cheaper and more efficient than a dry dock.
“We’re visiting international shipyards and discussing agreements to adopt this solution,” the executive said.
The project being prepared includes integration with steel manufacturers interested in recycling scrap to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
In September, Porto do Açu signed a contract with Petrobras to provide services associated with berthing three floating production platforms.
The agreement is expected to last three years and includes the availability of quays for temporary berthing prior to disposal/recycling and specialized services for floating platforms in the port, which is located in the north region of Rio de Janeiro state.
The pre-decommissioning contract provides for the platforms to be temporarily docked so that they can later be recycled, according to the new sustainable disposal model created by Petrobras.
In addition to the temporary docking, the services include the removal of biofouling, the provision of electricity and the disposal of oily effluent from the tanks.
One of the FPSOs will go to the Ecovix shipyard in Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul state, where it will be dismantled and scrapped for Gerdau.
“Our intention is to develop a solution to expand our activities from pre-decommissioning to final decommissioning,” said Firmo.
According to the executive, Porto do Açu also intends to invest in expanding its terminal to receive a greater number of platforms.
Petrobras plans to invest US$9.8bn in decommissioning by 2027.
