Port of Itajaí expects container operations to resume in 90 days, says new leaseholder

With the results of the transitory lease of the Port of Itajaí, located in northern Santa Catarina, set since November, there is still a lingering question: when will the complex resume regular container operations? Marco Antônio de Araújo, CEO of Mada Araújo, the winning bidder in the tender, estimates it will take around 90 days.
The executive desires operations to resume quickly, but that depends on several factors. The port can receive ships but needs specific repairs for seamless operation, so the company is looking for newer equipment.
“We believe that in 90 days, we will resolve the situation of the needed repairs,” guesses the businessman. Although this time may seem significant, it is short in the context of the temporary lease.
One of Mada Araújo’s arguments in its execution proposal was the willingness of shipowners to work with the group. This streamlines the process of resuming activities, focusing on logistics.
As for the equipment being procured, Marco Antônio emphasizes that there are already 12 forklifts ready in Itajaí, but more machines will be imported, some from Germany.
However, Mada Araújo’s actions will not be solely structural. The company wants the community of Itajaí to ‘interact’ with the port and understand its importance for the city. This includes not only the population but also the workers at the complex.
“(To make) people understand more about how the port directly affects their lives,” comments Marco Antônio. “There is a strong intention on our part to bring the Chamber of Commerce into the port, an arbitration chamber that can serve all users,” he continues.
“We will provide incentives (to the workers), give them good conditions, so that they can also be included and work in peace,” he adds, outlining ideas for the employees.
