DP World San Antonio to adopt Latin America’s first vacuum-based mooring system
Mar, 07, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202410
DP World San Antonio is on the brink of a historic milestone as the first port terminal in Chile and Latin America to adopt a vacuum-based, fully automated mooring system for ships.
This cutting-edge technology, previously present in only five container terminals worldwide, including Salalah (Oman), Beirut (Lebanon), Ngqura (South Africa), Napier (New Zealand), and Tangier (Morocco), is being implemented as part of the $7 billion investment made by the San Antonio Port concessionaire.
The MoorMaster NxG system, developed by Cavotec, is set to be inaugurated in the first half of 2024. The system’s ability to neutralize the effects of waves offers a crucial solution for facing storms and ensuring continuous and safe port operations.
Curtis Doiron, CEO of DP World Chile, emphasized the importance of this technological advancement: “MoorMaster is successfully operating in five container ports worldwide. We will be the first port terminal – indiscriminately – in Chile and the Americas to incorporate this cutting-edge technology, which provides great safety to our employees, operational continuity, efficiency, and competitiveness to the country’s international trade.”
The massive investment of $7 billion in installing this system reflects DP World San Antonio’s commitment to ensuring excellence in its operations. Doiron further emphasized: “This system significantly reduces the risk of ship mooring cable breakage, providing greater protection to our terminal personnel and ship crews.”
In addition to improving safety, MoorMaster NxG promises additional benefits such as vessel stabilization, reduced docking and undocking times, as well as decreased fuel consumption, contributing positively to the environment.
The system, whose installation is already underway with the support of experts from the United States and New Zealand, is scheduled to be operational in the coming months.
This initiative marks a significant step in modernizing and enhancing port operations in the region, positioning DP World San Antonio as a leader in innovation and sustainability in the industry.
