Argentina opens its market to Uruguayan dairy imports

Uruguayan dairy products are finding their way to Argentina after the Milei administration formalized its decision to open the market for imports of some food items and other staple products.
According to a report by Uruguay XXI, Javier Milei’s administration’s decision could boost the momentum of Conaprole’s external sales after Argentina ranked fifth among Uruguayan company destinations in 2023.
The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) formalized the exemption from Value Added Tax (VAT) on the importation of some food items as well as personal hygiene products.
Through resolution “A” 7980, the BCRA included imports formalized from this Friday onwards that correspond to “basic consumer basket goods whose tariff positions according to the Common Nomenclature of the Mercosur (NCM) are detailed in point 12.4 of the ‘Foreign Exchange and Exchange’ rules.”
Conaprole could be one of the beneficiaries of the measure.
After being one of Uruguay’s top exporting companies in 2023, Conaprole seeks to capitalize on this measure to boost its dairy sales, on top of having consolidated its position in Latin America and achieved record revenue, surpassing $1 billion in sales.
During this period, the most frequent destinations for its sales were Brazil, Algeria, China, Russia, and Mexico.
Which products are included in the measure?
Dairy products and derivatives stand out in the list authorized by the government for Uruguayan exporters, although other food items such as beef, pork, poultry, and fish are also part of it.
Foodstuffs also include eggs, vegetables, legumes, fruits, greens, nuts, and other primary foods; spices; cereals and their derivatives; oilseeds and their derivatives; fats and oils; food preparations (pasta, sauces, bakery products, confectionery, canned goods); foodstuffs (extracts, concentrates, cocoa), beers, and soft drinks.
