Brazilian Furniture and Mattress Exports Total US$48.9 Million in January

January, a traditionally weak month for the Brazilian furniture and mattress market, saw an unexpected BRL 48.9 million in exports. This figure represents a 20.4% decrease compared to December 2023 but marks an 8.2% increase over a year ago.
According to Abimóvel (Brazilian Furniture Industry Association), the positive variation between January 2023 and 2024 suggests that the sector has hit the ground running this year, foreshadowing a more favorable outlook for exports ahead. Further details are available in the “Conjuntura de Móveis” [Furniture Outlook] study, developed by IEMI for the industry association, which provides an overview of both production and sales in the domestic market, as well as exports and imports.
After a challenging period for foreign trade, with Brazilian furniture and mattress exports declining by 11.4% in value in 2023 compared to 2022, the new year signals more promising paths. According to Irineu Munhoz, president of Abimóvel, “the obstacles observed in both the domestic and international markets are fading as we are seeing recovery signs in exports, an essential activity for strengthening the Brazilian furniture industry and our position in the global market.” The industry association also believes that companies are increasingly understanding the importance of internationalization and adapting operations to enter new markets.

These numbers reveal the impact of global bottlenecks but also highlight the potential of the Brazilian furniture industry, according to Cândida Cervieri, the group’s executive director. “In this year alone, we’ve already facilitated the attendance of numerous international buyers at trade shows held in Brazil. Additionally, we’ve showcased our brands at prominent international events, including those in Germany and Mexico. Furthermore, we’re gearing up to participate in the Milan Furniture Fair in April and have plans to exhibit in the United States in May, among various other upcoming initiatives,” she discloses.
