Peru Explores Beef Export to China

Peru is poised to initiate beef exports to China following discussions with Asian companies, leveraging the country’s status as free from foot and mouth disease, revealed Ángel Manero Campos, head of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

Manero Campos highlighted that Peru aims to export poultry, pork, and beef worth up to $3 billion over the next five years, contingent upon the establishment of robust health protocols.

“With beef, for instance, given our foot and mouth disease-free status, we’re in a position to export. We’re currently in talks with Chinese firms to commence beef exports to China,” stated Manero Campos, emphasizing the importance of sanitary control for such exports.

These discussions align with the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Peru for the inauguration of the Chancay port, with the objective of commencing beef exports to China as early as next year.

Furthermore, efforts are underway to bolster Peru’s National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) to implement protocols declaring Peru free from avian flu, thus facilitating poultry exports globally.

Manero Campos also underscored plans to address pig health issues to ensure the quality of Peruvian products in international markets, projecting significant export potential in poultry, pork, and beef, estimated between $1 billion and $3 billion within five years.

Additionally, the Alto Piura irrigation project is slated for implementation this year, supported by Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista, reflecting the government’s commitment to agricultural development.

Moreover, Midagri, with an investment exceeding 372 million soles, will execute various activities, projects, and works through the Agro Rural program this year, benefiting over 180,000 small-scale producers across 21 regions. These initiatives aim to enhance irrigation infrastructure, supporting family farming, which contributes to 70% of the nation’s food supply.
