The ship carrying the first train for São Paulo’s monorail line 17-Gold arrived at the Port of Santos on the morning of Saturday, the 29th. Once docked, the train will undergo unloading procedures and customs clearance before being transported to São Paulo.
Upon clearance, a special logistics operation will transport the train to the Água Espraiada Yard, where it will undergo final assembly and rigorous testing protocols to ensure its safety and readiness for operation.
The ship “Kong Que Song” departed from the Port of Zhangjiagang in Shanghai on May 15, bringing the first of 14 trains ordered by the São Paulo Metro from BYD. The second train is currently being manufactured in China and is expected to arrive in Brazil later this year, with the remaining trains scheduled for delivery throughout 2025 according to the established timeline.
Train Specifications
The first train, along with the other 13 units, is designed exclusively for the monorail line 17-Gold project. It features automatic operation (UTO) and utilizes Train Control Monitoring System (TCMS) technology and CBTC signaling. This system uses digital radio communication to form moving blocks between trains, allowing for closer spacing and reduced intervals.
Each monorail train consists of five cars. The end cars each have 21 seats, while the intermediate cars have 24 seats each, totaling 114 seats. The train has a total capacity of 616 passengers, including priority seating and areas for passengers with disabilities.
The train includes walk-through carriages, air conditioning, LED lighting, surveillance cameras, a fire detection and suppression system, and an audiovisual passenger communication system with a dynamic line map and an intercom to the Operational Control Center (CCO).
The train is 3.2 meters wide, with end cars each measuring 13.5 meters and intermediate cars measuring 10 meters. Including the 0.95-meter passage area, the train’s total length is 60.8 meters. Each car has four doors (two on each side) that are 1.6 meters wide and compliant with accessibility standards. The side walls are equipped with panoramic windows for excellent views and top-hinged windows that can be opened for emergency ventilation.
The monorail operates on 800 mm wide concrete beams and has two bogies per car, each equipped with a traction motor, two load wheels, four guide wheels, and two stabilizing wheels. It runs on a nominal voltage of 750 V DC, with an operational speed of 80 km/h.
The train is equipped with traction batteries that serve as a backup power source, ensuring that the train can reach the next station even in the event of a power outage, providing enhanced safety for passengers in emergencies.
