The federal government has signed the service order to begin construction of lot 8 of the Transnordestina Railway, with an investment of R$ 1 billion. This amount is part of the R$ 3.6 billion amendment from the Northeast Development Fund (FDNE) and aims to connect Piauí to the Port of Pecém in Ceará.
The signing took place in the municipality of Baturité (CE), one of the locations to be crossed by Lot 8, which will also pass through the municipalities of Quixadá, Itapiúna, and Capistrano, covering a distance of 46 km.
The contract for the new stretch includes the construction of three bridges, two viaducts, and four level crossings, with construction expected to begin within 45 days after signing. Currently, five other lots (4, 5, 6, 7, and 11) are already underway, covering the central region of the state and access to the Port of Pecém. With the signing of lot 8, only lots 9 and 10 will remain — totaling 97 km — to complete phase 1 of the railway. These final sections are expected to be contracted in 2025.
The railway is being prepared to begin its commissioning phase in 2025, with the first cargo shipments — such as soy, soybean meal, corn, and limestone — departing from the Piauí Intermodal Cargo Terminal toward southern Ceará and regions of Pernambuco.
The Minister of Transport explained the section that will serve Piauí in exporting the state’s production.
“This is the largest infrastructure project in the Brazilian Northeast and brings new hope. When the Transnordestina Railway is ready, Baturité, Piauí, and Ceará will become a region with more opportunities to grow. We are going to finish this project. That is President Lula’s determination,” the minister emphasized.
To date, 676 km of track from the main line of phase 1 have already been completed. Adding the 235 km currently under construction and the 46 km of the new lot, the project reaches 281 km under execution, which represents approximately 75% of the physical progress of the first stage, expected to be completed by 2027.
Chief of Staff Minister Rui Costa is expected to submit a bill to Congress to authorize the investment of these resources in the Transnordestina. “We expect to hold an event to release this funding for the project by early July,” he noted.
The railway section connecting the municipality of Salgueiro to the Port of Suape in Pernambuco is funded under a separate budget since being included in the new PAC to be resumed. In the second half of this year, calls for bids will be published to hire the companies that will continue the work. The estimated budget to complete lots SPS 04 (Custódia–Arcoverde, 73 km) and SPS 07 (Cachoeirinha–Belém de Maria, 53 km) is R$ 450 million.
