On October 2 and 3, São Paulo will host one of Brazil’s premier events focused on innovation and technology in port management. The 2024 Port Performance Summit Brazil will take place at the AMCHAM Business Center, with confirmed participation from over 30 ports and terminals across the country.

The event will feature 26 speakers, discussion panels, keynotes, and success stories, offering a unique opportunity for port sector leaders, operators, companies, and sector specialists to discuss cutting-edge technologies and their use in ports and terminals.

“The event’s mission is to serve as a key platform for knowledge, networking, business making, and fostering relationships, putting the most important applications of innovation, technology, automation, and digitization for ports and terminals in evidence. Focusing on four strategic pillars—Innovation, Technology, Automation, and Digitization for Ports and Terminals—the Summit will bring together executives and experts to tackle crucial topics such as Port Community Systems in Brazil, port competitiveness, resilience, the blue economy, ESG, digital transformation, autonomous systems, and the latest technological applications in artificial intelligence, IoT, digital twins, and automation to boost productivity, efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the port sector.

These topics are becoming increasingly important for Brazilian ports and terminals’ strategic planning, as capacity expansion is a crucial concern, especially as the sector seeks solutions to accommodate the berthing of larger vessels and increased cargo volumes.

The Summit will feature key representatives from the port sector across Brazil, along with executives and industry leaders. Attendees will have access to high-level debates, including a special panel on implementing a Brazilian Port Community System effectively. Curated by the Brazilian Association of Customs Terminals and Recintos (ABTRA), this panel will feature specialists such as Angelino Caputo, Roberto Paveck, and Fábio Lavor Teixeira from the Ministry of Ports and Airports. Another discussion on container terminal automation will be led by Caio Marcelo Morel Corrêa from the Brazilian Association of Container Terminals (ABRATEC), with contributions from Jardel Fischer, CIO at Portonave, Fabiana Morgante de Alencar, IT and Information Security Manager at BTP, and Marcelo Patricio, Executive Operations Manager at Santos Brasil.

A key panel curated by the Association of Private Port Terminals (ATP) will explore the theme “Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Unlocking ESG Potential.” Moderated by Admiral Murillo Barbosa, ATP’s CEO, the panel will feature industry professionals sharing their insights and perspectives: Caio Cunha, Portonave’s Manager of Port Relations and the Caruara Reserve at Porto do Açu; Carla Matos, Corporate Affairs Manager at Porto Sudeste; and Fabrício Martins, Sustainability Manager at Portonave.

Port Sector Overview

Brazil’s port sector has shown strong performance in 2024. According to ANTAQ data, public ports saw an 8.37% increase in cargo throughput in the first half of the year compared to last year, at some 231.6 million tonnes. Overall, the Brazilian waterway sector’s cargo throughput rose 4.28%, totaling 644.76 million tonnes transported.

Private Use Terminals (TUPs) also recorded 413.2 million tonnes in the first half of 2024, up 2.12% year-on-year.

In addition, containerized cargo reached a record 73.3 million tonnes between January and June, representing a 22.72% increase over the same period last year.

From January to the third week of August 2024, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services (MDICS) and the Foreign Trade Secretariat, exports increased by 1.2% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling $215.14 billion. Imports rose by 5.2% to $161.47 billion. As a result, the trade balance posted a surplus of $53.67 billion, down 9.2%, while trade volume increased by 2.9% to $376.60 billion.
