High Melon Exports Drive Up Prices and Tighten Domestic Supply, Cepea Reports

In Rio Grande do Norte/Ceará, melon prices rose this week (September 9-13). Type 5 to 8 yellow melons were sold for R$ 42.00 per 13 kg box (delivered to São Paulo), marking a 6% increase. This price hike is attributed to the low supply of melons in the domestic market, as high export volumes absorb a significant portion of the harvest from the region.

For instance, in August, nearly 8,000 tons were exported, according to Comex Stat, a 33% increase compared to the previous year. Shipments in September are also expected to be substantial.

According to Hortifrúti/Cepea collaborators, most fruits are of good quality, although some yellow melons show spots, which could affect their marketability. Overall, sales were robust this week, with even the previously weak orange variety showing improvement and slight appreciation.
