The federal government has taken another step toward making a new Federal Police headquarters at the Port of Santos viable by signing an agreement for the preparation of the unit’s detailed design, while authorities also announced new infrastructure investments for the port complex.

The new Federal Police station will be built within the port perimeter, with direct access to the estuary channel, on a site of about 5,800 square meters. The building will have 10 floors and will bring together, in a single complex, the agency’s operational and administrative structures in Santos.

Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho said the new unit is expected to strengthen efforts to combat international drug trafficking, smuggling and other forms of organized crime at Latin America’s largest port.

Rodrigo Luiz Sanfurgo, the Federal Police superintendent in Sao Paulo, said the future headquarters’ location should expand the agency’s operational presence in an area considered strategic for public security and for protecting the port community.

In addition to the new Federal Police headquarters project, authorities announced investments in the second phase of the Guaruja Perimetral road and in the construction of two new berths in the Alemoa area.

According to Santos Port Authority President Anderson Pomini, the second phase of the Guaruja Perimetral road is expected to be delivered within three years, with estimated investment of 1 billion reais. He said the project, together with the Santos-Guaruja tunnel and the airport, should improve the city’s logistics and port operating conditions.

Regarding the new Alemoa berths, Pomini said the project will involve 350 million reais in investment from partner companies, with the aim of expanding the port’s capacity to accommodate cargo throughput growth.

The executive also said the Santos-Guaruja tunnel timeline remains on track and that the port authority has about 2.6 billion reais available for the project.

According to Costa Filho, the investment package also includes more than 4 billion reais for breakwater rehabilitation, in addition to funding from private terminals to improve the port’s infrastructure.
