AI to Monitor Solid and Liquid Waste in Santos Port Channel Starting Next Year

Starting next year, artificial intelligence (AI) will be used to detect and monitor solid and liquid waste in the Santos Port Channel, the Bertioga Channel, and the Cubatão River. This cutting-edge technology is being developed by the startup DataOverSeas, with initial testing expected to take place in the first quarter of 2025.
DataOverSeas won the 1st ESG Challenge 2024, a contest organized by the Santos Port Authority (APS) in collaboration with the Santos Technology Park Foundation in late July. Their innovative solution aims to enhance waste monitoring and identification in the estuary.
The startup secured a 12-month incubation grant worth R$36,000 at the Technology Park and established a legal entity to develop the project. While APS retains the rights to use the technology, DataOverSeas will hold the intellectual property and commercialization rights.
In a statement, APS highlighted that the project focuses on “waste management and monitoring using artificial intelligence (AI) at the Port of Santos.” The goal is to standardize waste identification, classification, and tracking using progressive machine learning algorithms, ensuring increasingly precise and efficient waste management. Once fully developed, this solution could be deployed at ports worldwide, not just in Santos.
Renato Marcio dos Santos, co-founder of DataOverSeas, expects the prototype to be completed by March 2025, after which testing will commence. “We will collect data and provide reports to APS to streamline the management and communication of waste-related issues,” he explained.
Santos added that “the app will be available to the port community, including terminals, APS, and any stakeholders interested in the product,” describing it as “a pioneering project—nothing like this currently exists in any port globally.”
Eduardo Bittencourt, president of the Santos Technology Park Foundation, emphasized the support the startup will receive through its incubation at the Park. “We provide meeting rooms, coworking spaces, an auditorium, and a network of experts to assist with day-to-day challenges and market opportunities. We collaborate with partners like Sebrae to help startups avoid common early-stage entrepreneurial mistakes,” Bittencourt said.
He also noted that the Park hosts “32 resident startups, six of which are focused on the blue economy, developing solutions for maritime industries, ports, and eco-tourism.”
Commenting on the growing connection between the Port of Santos and the city, Bittencourt highlighted how APS works to integrate startups and the Technology Park with port companies “focused on solving daily operational challenges.”
