Mirgor port in Argentina slated to begin construction in 2025

The construction of a new port in Río Grande, Argentina, is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025, confirmed Roberto Murcia, president of the Provincial Port Authority of Tierra del Fuego. Murcia discussed the progress of the project, which is spearheaded by Mirgor, in an interview with FM Espectáculo radio.

“The province has completed its part of the process,” Murcia stated, noting that last month, he met with the Undersecretary of Ports and Navigable Waterways. “The necessary documentation has been submitted to the federal government. The authorities have asked the company for some clarification before proceeding with the construction clearance. The process is well advanced.”

Murcia explained that the next phase will involve constructing the entire planned offshore infrastructure, which is critical for protecting the port’s access channel. “This remains a private project, intended for public use, and is guided by private sector designs. From an administrative standpoint, everything is ready,” he added.

Once the protective structures are in place, the project will move forward with the excavation of the port’s internal area. According to Murcia, the timeline for completion is set at 36 months. “As infrastructure work progresses, they can simultaneously start building warehouses and container yards. Multiple tasks can be carried out in parallel,” he explained.

Container Yard Development

Murcia also touched on the development of the container yard, stating that an agreement has already been signed with Provincial Roads. “We are now assessing the necessary earthworks. In about 15 days, we will begin construction of the dry port in Río Grande.”

He highlighted that half of the cargo received is destined for Río Grande, aiming to expedite its movement to the city’s logistics area, ensuring faster delivery to recipients.

Ushuaia-Puerto Williams Route 

Murcia also addressed the resumption of the Ushuaia-Puerto Williams ferry route: “This week, we completed the first crossing. We’re resuming the operations that were in place before the pandemic. With Puerto Navarino now open, we have another connection point. We held a meeting with all parties involved to optimize passenger transport, especially considering the high season and the use of smaller vessels departing from our catamaran sector.”

He emphasized the importance of reviving this tourist route post-pandemic, which would allow additional companies to operate within the sector.
