Brazil’s primary protein buyer, China, purchased 66,101 tonnes in January, down 14.5% year-on-year. Nonetheless, the amount purchased was still a recovery compared to the 22,242 tonnes imported in December.
In September last year, the Chinese temporarily suspended imports of Brazilian beef because of two atypical cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), known as the “mad cow” disease.
The embargo was lifted in December, months after the OIE confirmed that the cases did not harm the herd, as they were spontaneously generated and not contaminated.
