Brazil and Peru signed a new bilateral trade agreement on Tuesday (5th), opening up trade avenues for both countries. Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro and Peruvian Ambassador Rómulo Acurio finalized the deal, allowing Brazilian apples to be exported to Peru and Peruvian citrus to be imported by Brazil. Previously, Peru had sourced its apples exclusively from Chile, but now Brazil has become the second country with access to this market.

Fávaro emphasized the importance of balanced trade relations. “A strong trade relationship is one where we both sell and buy. Today’s agreement embodies that balance,” he stated.
Peruvian Ambassador Acurio called the signing a “historic” day, marking the end of a three-year wait for new product access agreements between the nations.
Following the signing ceremony, Fávaro and the Peruvian delegation discussed strategies to expand export opportunities for Brazilian agricultural products.
A key topic was Chancay Port, a Chinese-funded project in Peru that aims to shorten distances and streamline exports.
As China’s largest trading partner in Latin America, Brazil stands to benefit from Chancay Port’s proximity, which could facilitate exports of soy, corn, beef, and chicken.
Fávaro noted that this direct connection with the Pacific would expedite the transport of Brazilian exports to Asia, especially China.
