October marked a historic milestone for the Port of São Francisco do Sul, with exports reaching an all-time high of 1.1 million tonnes.
Brazilian grains played a pivotal role in achieving this unprecedented record. Over the 31-day period, the port shipped 583,000 tonnes of soybeans and 476,000 tonnes of corn to China. The remaining exports included wood products and steel coils.
Soybean shipments from this northern Santa Catarina terminal accounted for 11% of Brazil’s total soybean exports in October, which reached 5.5 million tonnes nationwide.
At a price of BRL 2,300 per tonne, soybean exports through São Francisco do Sul generated BRL 2.6 billion in revenue for Brazil.
“This milestone is a historic achievement for the Port of São Francisco. We had never surpassed the 1-million-tonne mark before. Even with increased throughput this year, our average monthly exports in 2024 stood at 850,000 tonnes,” said the port’s president, Cleverton Vieira.
According to Vieira, the record was made possible by optimizing and maintaining equipment along the port’s Export Corridor, which facilitates the loading of grains onto vessels.
“Our priority has been preventing equipment downtime. We’re achieving this through consistent maintenance investments and by training our staff,” he explained.
Vieira also highlighted the significant contribution of Tesc, a leased terminal within the public port. “In October alone, Tesc exported 332,000 tonnes of corn, thanks to recent investments in port infrastructure,” he noted.
October’s Total Cargo Throughput
In October, total cargo throughput at São Francisco do Sul reached 1.67 million tonnes. This included 588,000 tonnes of inbound cargo, driven primarily by steel products (312,000 tonnes) and fertilizers (264,000 tonnes).
This performance represents a 12% increase compared to September when the port handled 1.48 million tonnes.
