Among the 125 companies participating in Brazilian Health Devices (BHD), a sectoral project of the Brazilian Association of the Medical Device Industry (ABIMO) in partnership with ApexBrasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), exports totaled $154.5 million to 131 countries in 2024. The main export destinations included the United States, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia.
Over 81% of exporting companies increased their export volume during the period. Additionally, 84 companies expanded into new markets, and 46 introduced new products to their international portfolios.
BHD members exported 210 types of medical devices during the period. The main products included orthopedic articles and devices, dental instruments, prosthetic devices, preparations containing therapeutic substances, medical and surgical instruments, and dental filling cements.
The medical-hospital products segment remained the most representative in export volume, accounting for 68.54% of total exports. It reached $804.89 million in 2024, reflecting almost 32% growth compared to the previous year. The dentistry sector recorded $135.97 million in exports (+11.7%), while laboratory product exports totaled $123.93 million (+15.10%), and rehabilitation products reached $109.48 million (+7.01%).
Heart valves, liquid distribution, dosing equipment, plastic bags and pouches for medical use, orthopedic articles and devices, and sterilized catgut sutures were among the most exported medical devices in 2024.
In 2024, most Brazilian medical device exports were shipped to countries in the Americas, which accounted for 63.1% of total sales. The region’s top buyers were the United States, Argentina, and Mexico. However, Brazilian products maintained a strong global market presence. European countries accounted for 20.86% of total exports, Asian countries for 14.25%, and Africa and Oceania combined for 1.78%. South Korea and the Netherlands also stood out among the top buyers last year.
Despite the growth in exports, imports also increased, leading to a trade deficit of just over $8 million in 2024. Brazil imported approximately $5 billion in laboratory products during this period, representing more than half of the total import volume. The medical-hospital sector also had a significant share of imports, accounting for 38.93%.
The top suppliers to Brazil were the United States, Germany, China, Ireland, and Switzerland. The main imported items included immunological products for laboratory use, medical and surgical instruments, diagnostic reagents, probes, and catheters.
