China’s pork and beef production to decline in 2022, says USDA expert

China’s live pig production is expected to fall 5% in 2022, due to low prices and disease outbreaks in 2021 which have led to significant slaughters and delays in rebuilding the herd, estimated a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) expert.
Chinese pork production, meanwhile, will decline by 14% next year as fewer hogs reach the market and government policies designed to limit price fluctuations inadvertently affect the sector’s expansion.
Pork production in China, the largest global consumer of the product, is linked to the demand for soy meal. This may impact imports of the oilseed for which Brazil is the largest global exporter.
