The total cargo throughput at the Port of Montevideo for the January–December 2024 period reached 15,629,355 tonnes, reflecting a 1% decline compared to the previous year, according to the National Logistics Institute (Inalog), based on data provided by the National Port Administration.
Bulk cargo movements totaled 3,073,818 tonnes, marking a 9% drop, primarily due to declines in corn (99%), fertilizer (34%), and coal (23%) imports. Meanwhile, general cargo volumes rose 18% to 3,042,181 tonnes, largely driven by a 117% surge in wheat shipments. Containerized cargo, however, fell 4%.
The institute highlighted that, in January–December 2024, export requests for soybeans (up 212%), wheat (up 171%), and concentrated milk (up 32%) increased year-over-year in volume terms. Conversely, rice exports fell 36%, barley malt declined 7%, and frozen beef shipments dropped 3%. Timber exports saw an overall decline of 18%, though plywood shipments rose 20%, and sawn wood volumes increased 10%. In contrast, wood chips and raw logs registered declines of 46% and 6%, respectively.
Container throughput for Uruguay’s foreign trade increased 4% to 440,000 TEUs. However, Uruguay’s role as a regional distribution hub saw a 4% decline, reaching 675,000 TEUs, with full container volumes down 3% (535,000 TEUs) and empty container movements falling 6% (140,000 TEUs).
Total container throughput, including loaded and unloaded volumes, amounted to 1,115,000 TEUs in 2024, reflecting a 1% decrease compared to 2023. Additionally, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) recently reported that Montevideo handled 1,125,290 TEUs that year, ranking 20th among 96 ports in Latin America.
