Port of Vitória Expands Capacity by 70% to Accommodate Larger Vessels

Following an upgrade to its operational capacity, the Vitória port complex—operated by Vports—can now receive ships of up to 83,000 tons, a significant increase from the previous limit of 70,000 tons.
According to Vports, this expansion has enabled a 70% increase in the number of Panamax vessels able to navigate the port’s channel.
The improvement comes after extensive studies conducted by Vports, combined with recently completed dredging works—an investment of approximately R$30 million—which have boosted the port’s cargo throughput potential.
Vports stated that the initiative aims to enhance Espírito Santo’s port logistics capabilities by preparing the Port of Vitória to handle larger ships.
The upgrade will allow the port to service bulk carriers and general cargo vessels more efficiently, with larger consignments and, consequently, lower costs per ton transported.
Pedro Benevides, Vports’ Commercial Director, said that the increased vessel handling capacity represents a significant leap in the state’s competitiveness, offering a strategic alternative for long-haul routes and large-scale operations.
“Our investments in modernization, improvements in port infrastructure, and now this important step in increasing gross tonnage capacity will drive a boost in our cargo throughput,” said Benevides.
The port is now equipped to accommodate Panamax vessels up to 245 meters in length (LOA) and 32.5 meters in beam (width).
This capacity upgrade at one of the port complex’s berths was among the highlights presented by Vports at Intermodal South America—the largest logistics and foreign trade event in Latin America—held this week in São Paulo.
In addition, the port authority showcased at its 70-square-meter booth a comprehensive overview of initiatives carried out over the two and a half years since the start of its private concession, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of the ports under its management.
“Since taking over the concession, we’ve made major strides toward modernizing port infrastructure and ensuring operational efficiency and agility. We’ve invested around R$ 580 million in improvements with our partner companies. That’s what we came to show at the event—to attract new partners, enable new business opportunities, and demonstrate the full logistics potential of Espírito Santo,” said Gustavo Serrão, CEO of Vports.
