Brazil Sees 153% Surge in Rice Export Volume

Week 202518

Brazil exported 158.5 thousand tons of rice (on a husk basis) in March 2025, generating revenue of US$45.3 million, according to the monthly report from the Brazilian Rice Industry Association (Abiarroz).

The volume shipped last month represents a 153% increase compared to February when exports totaled 62.5 thousand tons. Revenue also rose sharply, by 109%. The performance was also positive year-over-year, with an 86% rise in volume and a 5% increase in revenue compared to March 2024.

“This year, the main export item was rice in husk, a lower value-added raw material, whereas, in 2024, white rice dominated shipments. That explains the discrepancy between volume growth and revenue gains,” said Gustavo Trevisan, Director of International Affairs at Abiarroz.

According to Trevisan, the sharp increase in husk rice exports is directly linked to the harvest of the new crop, which has boosted the domestic supply of this raw material.

In terms of volume, Mexico, Senegal, and Nicaragua were the leading importers of Brazilian rice during the first quarter of 2025. Senegal topped the list for March alone, followed by Venezuela and Mexico.

On the import side, Brazil purchased 117 thousand tons of rice (on a husk basis) last month, spending US$32.5 million. Compared to the same period in 2024, this reflects a 4% drop in volume and a 33% decline in value.

The Brazilian industry’s processed rice exports totaled 84.3 thousand tons in March 2025, generating US$27.5 million. According to Abiarroz, while export volumes remained stable compared to the same period last year, revenue declined by 36.3%.
