Mato Grosso Cotton Exports Rise in 2025
May, 15, 2025 Posted by Sylvia SchandertWeek 202520
Data from the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) show that in April, Mato Grosso exported 169,850 tonnes of cotton lint, the highest volume ever recorded for April in the historical series. Additionally, when analyzing the cumulative exports for the 2023/24 crop cycle — from August 2024 to April 2025 — the state has already shipped 1.52 million tons of fiber abroad, a 14.80% increase compared to the 2022/23 crop cycle period.
According to Imea analysts, among the leading destinations for Mato Grosso’s cotton lint, Vietnam leads the ranking of importers, followed by Pakistan and China. “Given China’s position in the ranking, it can be concluded that increased purchases from Vietnam, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have primarily supported the strong pace of shipments. These countries have already imported — between Aug/24 and Apr/25 — a volume higher than recorded during the 2022/23 crop cycle (Aug/23 to Jul/24), while China’s volume has declined,” the analysts explain.
They also note the lower Chinese demand was expected, considering the country’s higher lint stock levels this season. “The diversification of Mato Grosso’s export destinations could sustain a strong export pace until the end of the cycle in July this year.”

Market Update
Cotton lint sales from the 2024/25 crop in Mato Grosso reached 59.99% of the estimated production by April, showing an increase of 2.84 percentage points compared to the previous month. “It is worth noting that producers have taken advantage of favorable market moments to close deals. As a result, the average negotiated price in April 2025 was R$139.30 per arroba, up 1.42% compared to March 2025,” the analysts explain.
Regarding sales from the 2025/26 crop, there were reports of some isolated negotiations during the month, resulting in a 0.96 percentage point increase in April compared to March, reaching 16.00% of the estimated production for the season.
However, analysts also highlight that producers showed caution in negotiations during April 2025, considering the current price scenario, high production costs, and uncertainties regarding the next cycle’s production. Finally, the average sale price in April 2025 stood at R$137.21 per arroba, representing a 1.24% decrease compared to March 2025.
