Brazil’s fertile egg exports drop nearly 40% in first half of 2025 amid avian flu impact

As a main result of the drop in shipments of fertile eggs destined for broiler chick production — and also due to the self-imposed embargo declared by Brazil after confirming a case of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) in commercial poultry — Brazilian exports of genetic material in the form of fertile eggs (including those for the production of commercial layers and breeders) fell by nearly 40% in the first half of 2025.
Year-on-year declines were recorded throughout the semester, reaching their peak following the HPAI detection in May and June, when shipments dropped by 55% and 65%, respectively, compared to the same months in 2024.
Since most of the decline likely affected lower unit-value items, the drop in export revenue was less severe, with a reduction of approximately 25%.
