The United States is expected to implement secondary sanctions on Russia as early as this Friday, according to information from a White House official to Reuters.
The source also reported that the meeting between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, held this Wednesday, went well.
The two spoke for three hours to discuss a solution to the war in Ukraine, which is approaching three and a half years of conflict.
The secondary tariff was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump in July. It would be enforced if Russia failed to reach a peace agreement within a time frame set by the U.S. government.
Initially, the deadline was set at 50 days, but last week, Trump announced he would give Moscow 10 days to end the war with Ukraine before applying the sanctions.
The Lula administration is using what little leverage it has left to try to open a technical communication channel with Washington.
