Brazil seeks to expand pork export access to Japan

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture is visiting Japan this week to advance discussions on expanding the market for Brazilian pork. Currently, only companies based in Santa Catarina are authorized to export to Japan, as the state has been recognized as a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination since 2007. The goal is to extend this authorization to Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul and to overcome what the ministry describes as “procrastinating measures” by the Japanese government.

In 2024, pork exports from slaughterhouses in Santa Catarina to Japan reached 93.4 thousand tonnes, a 131% increase over the previous year, with revenue totaling US$312.5 million. The state holds the largest share of total pork shipments, accounting for around 55% of sales to all destinations.
