The Port of Vila do Conde, in Pará, has solidified its position as the leading terminal in Brazil’s Northern Region during the first half of 2025. According to data from the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), the port handled 9.5 million tonnes, topping a regional total of 29 million tonnes moved in the period.

Here is a historical overview of container handling at the Port of Vila do Conde starting from January 2022. The chart was prepared using data from DataLiner:

Following Vila do Conde, other notable standouts included the ports of Santarém (7.2 million tonnes), Santana (1.8 million tonnes), Belém (1.4 million tonnes), and Porto Velho (1.2 million tonnes). The strategic positioning of these ports is crucial for the seamless flow of agricultural, mineral, and industrial goods, thereby linking local production to national and international markets.

For the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, the results underscore the strength and strategic role of the Northern Region. “These figures confirm gains in logistical efficiency and the competitiveness of the sector. We are working to ensure that agribusiness and other segments of the national economy are strengthened through our trade routes,” he stated.

Between January and June, soybeans stood out as the leading commodity, with 7.7 million tonnes shipped. This volume accounts for 36.5% of the total and represents an 11.39% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Other key cargoes included chemicals and fertilizers (2.6 million tonnes each), as well as bauxite (2.1 million tonnes) and oil and oil products (1.2 million tonnes).

Containerized cargo also saw significant growth. The volume rose from 5.58 million to 5.94 million tonnes in the year-over-year comparison for the first six months, driven by logistical improvements.

Import volumes also reflected this upward trend, increasing by 14.67% for the semester. The Northern Region’s strategic location, near the so-called Arco Norte, offers a more competitive route to Europe, the United States, and Asia, serving as an efficient alternative to ports in Brazil’s Southeast and South.

With investments exceeding R$3 billion, the Northern Region will be the primary beneficiary of the Federal Government’s new package for implementing and expanding Private Use Terminals (TUPs). Five new projects are planned across Pará and Amapá, focusing on modernizing and expanding port capacity to meet growing demand for solid and liquid bulk cargoes, in line with the region’s export-oriented profile.

With these first-half results, the region’s ports reaffirm their role as a critical logistics hub, helping diversify Brazil’s export routes and boosting the international competitiveness of the country’s agribusiness and industrial sectors.
