The drivers who travel through the port region of the São Paulo coast may gain a new mobility option. The city of Cubatão has presented a proposal to create the Porto-Indústria Corridor (Copi).

The 13.5 km route would connect the planned third lane of the Imigrantes highway directly to the Port of Santos.

The project was presented during a public hearing on the new lane, held last Thursday (Sept. 18), and aims to solve a long-standing bottleneck caused by the excess of trucks crossing the city.

Currently, the trip between the future third lane of the Imigrantes highway and the Port of Santos takes about 30 minutes. With the implementation of the Porto-Indústria Corridor, this time could be reduced to around 10 minutes, representing a decrease of approximately 67%.

This significant reduction promises to ease traffic, improve local logistics, and benefit drivers and truckers who travel through the region daily.

Structure of the new road
The corridor would begin in Sítio dos Areais and connect directly to Alemoa, ending at the Santos quay. According to the municipal administration, the Copi would have two lanes with a shoulder and capacity for up to 20,000 vehicles per day.

Mayor César Nascimento said in a statement to g1 that the project would allow the third lane of the Imigrantes Highway to fulfill its purpose of expanding light vehicle circulation, reducing heavy traffic at the entrance to Santos, and decreasing truckers’ waiting time at port terminals.

“We hope that this proposal will be included in the project and that the observations of Cubatão’s representatives, who were here today pointing out what needs to be improved, will also be taken into account,” said the mayor, according to a statement released by the city.

Third lane of the Imigrantes
The new Imigrantes lane will be 21.5 kilometers long, with 80% in tunnels and much of it within the Serra do Mar State Park. One of the tunnels will be about 6 kilometers long — the largest structure of its kind in Brazil.

The new lane will have two traffic lanes and a shoulder that can be converted into an additional lane.
