The Vice President of Brazil and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin, announced on Thursday afternoon (16) three major outcomes from the official mission he is leading this week in India.

“Trade between Brazil and India is growing. Last year it totaled US$12 billion. This year it could reach US$15 billion. India’s exports to Brazil are growing by more than 30% this year, and we could soon reach US$20 billion,” said Alckmin.

TARIFF PREFERENCES
Alckmin and India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, announced the expansion of the Mercosur–India Preferential Trade Agreement. The vice president explained that the current version covers around 450 tariff lines, but a schedule has been set to broaden the scope and diversify products with reduced tariffs. This expansion is highly anticipated by Brazilian companies operating in or exporting to the Indian market.

US$20 BILLION: THE TARGET FOR BILATERAL TRADE
“Today, our preferential agreement covers a small number of tariff lines. We can deepen and expand these lines to secure preferential terms for our exports,” said Alckmin. “Trade between Brazil and India is growing. Last year it was US$12 billion. This year it could reach US$15 billion. India’s exports to Brazil are up more than 30% this year, and we could quickly reach US$20 billion,” he projected.

ELECTRONIC VISA
The vice president also announced that Brazil will begin issuing electronic business visas for India. “I have good news: Brazil will now offer an electronic visa. All business and consulting professionals will be able to apply through our embassy in New Delhi and our consulate in Mumbai,” said Alckmin.

PETROBRAS
The vice president also highlighted developments in the energy sector. “Petrobras is signing a contract today to supply an additional six million barrels of oil to India. It is also launching 18 offshore oil exploration blocks in Brazil’s Santos and Campos Basins — a record. Next year, we’ll have 18 offshore blocks and an even greater number of onshore ones,” he said.

FIOCRUZ
Alckmin added that a new agreement in the health sector will be announced with the arrival of Minister Alexandre Padilha in New Delhi. “We want to strengthen our partnership in health and the healthcare industry. The Brazilian health minister arrives this Friday, and we plan to expand cooperation in the pharmaceutical and vaccine industries,” he said.
