The Port of Açu and SISTAC, a company specialized in inspection, maintenance and repair of subsea structures for the energy industry, will sign on Wednesday (Oct. 29) at Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brasil a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to study the joint offering of decommissioning services at the port-industrial complex located in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro state.

“The partnership is part of the Port of Açu’s strategy to host Brazil’s first sustainable decommissioning hub, which covers the stages of temporary berthing — already carried out at Açu since 2024 — pre-dismantling and dismantling,” said Vinicius Patel, Director of Port Administration and Services at the Port of Açu.

The agreement foresees the potential supply of services for the pre-dismantling phase of offshore platforms and other units, such as inspection, maintenance, and structural repair. Activities that may be performed include hull cleaning, mooring line cutting, pull-out operations (disconnection and removal of subsea equipment during decommissioning), welding, and plate maintenance.

“The partnership with the Port of Açu reinforces SISTAC’s commitment to safety, innovation, and sustainable operations, meeting the requirements of Brazil’s oil and gas sector,” said SISTAC CEO Carlos Madaleno, highlighting the use of cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art equipment.

Açu currently has berth capacity to serve up to three platforms simultaneously in pre-decommissioning activities, with the possibility of expanding to as many as ten units.

Among the port-industrial complex’s competitive advantages are its proximity to the Campos Basin, environmental licensing, and the capability to remove biofouling (such as sun coral), a unified control center for risk and emergency management, and integration with the country’s existing scrap logistics network.
