The Brazilian government has completed another step in its strategy to expand agribusiness exports by finalizing phytosanitary negotiations that authorize the sale of common beans and cowpeas to four Eurasian countries: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. These nations are members of the Eurasian Economic Union and together have around 36 million inhabitants, representing a relevant market for Brazilian agricultural products.
The information was released in a joint statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. According to the statement, in 2024, Brazilian exports to these destinations reached approximately US$38 million, with Armenia as the main buyer, accounting for US$26.3 million of the total.
The opening of these markets for common beans and cowpeas reinforces the export potential of crops in which Brazil has a strong production tradition and international competitiveness. Common beans, a staple of the Brazilian diet, are widely accepted in several countries and can be used for both direct consumption and the processed food industry.
Cowpeas, produced primarily in the North and Northeast regions, have significant economic and social importance. In addition to being part of traditional eating habits, the crop plays a significant role in generating income for small rural producers and contributes to regional development.
With the opening of these new markets, Brazilian agribusiness has reached the milestone of 519 commercial opportunities created since the beginning of 2023. According to the official note, this result is the outcome of coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, which have been working in an integrated manner to diversify destinations, expand Brazil’s international presence, and strengthen the agribusiness trade balance.
