Dredging moves forward at Inácio Barbosa Maritime Terminal, expanding port capacity

Dredging work at the Inácio Barbosa Maritime Terminal, or TMIB, in Sergipe state advanced on Wednesday (March 25) in another stage of the port infrastructure expansion project. The intervention is considered key to increasing the terminal’s operating capacity and enabling calls by larger vessels.

Operated by VLI, the terminal received a technical visit from representatives of the Sergipe State Secretariat for Economic Development and Science and Technology, known as Sedetec, and Brazil’s federal tax authority, Receita Federal, to monitor progress on the works.

The dredging covers the approach channel, berth and maneuvering area at TMIB, with an estimated 200,000 cubic meters of sediment to be removed. Once completed, the port’s draft is expected to increase from the current 9.8 meters to 10.2 meters, expanding its ability to handle ships carrying larger cargo volumes.

The state government expects the work to strengthen Sergipe’s port logistics and improve cargo-handling conditions in the state. During the visit, authorities also approved the construction of a new gatehouse to serve people and vehicles.

According to Sedetec Executive Secretary Marcelo Menezes, the terminal’s infrastructure upgrade could improve the state’s logistics competitiveness and help attract investment. He linked progress on the works to the Sergipe Deep Waters project and to the offshore platform decommissioning process.

Located in Barra dos Coqueiros, the Inácio Barbosa Maritime Terminal operates as a mixed-use general cargo terminal, focused on handling products tied to construction, agriculture and industry.

Separately, Sedetec signed a partnership with FGV Energia to prepare a technical study on Sergipe’s port infrastructure. The report is expected to assess TMIB’s current conditions, map future demand, size the infrastructure needed, and evaluate the socioeconomic impacts and benefits of a possible terminal expansion.
