The growing of Brazil’s Northern Arc as a strategic corridor for exports gained a new chapter in Itacoatiara, Amazonas state, with the arrival of the largest floating bulk transshipment system in the Americas. Developed by Super Terminais, Super Porto Verde received 250 million reais in investment and forms part of the company’s strategy to serve the grains and fertilizers segment with efficient logistics. The structure, described as a floating pier, left Manaus on April 30 and arrived in the Amazon municipality on May 1, where it is now in the installation phase.
The project is located about 175 kilometers from Manaus, in a region considered strategic for the integration of Amazon waterways with the export flows of Brazilian agribusiness.
“Being in Itacoatiara will provide a new leap in quality for national logistics. The Northern Arc has been consolidating itself as one of Brazil’s main export routes, with emphasis on waterway transport, a model that reduces environmental impacts and drives sustainable development. And Super Terminais already has 30 years of experience in Amazonas, in addition to being recognized as Brazil’s first green port,” said Marcello Di Gregorio, chief executive of Super Terminais.
The floating pier in Itacoatiara will be incorporated into a 300,000-square-meter port area and was designed to expand logistics capacity in the Amazon region, offering a more efficient alternative for the flow of Brazil’s agricultural production. Initially developed for container operations, the system was adapted to handle solid bulk transshipment, in line with growing demand for infrastructure along the Northern corridor.
In addition to expanding operational capacity, the investment is also expected to boost the regional economy. According to Super Terminais, Super Porto Verde should generate 130 direct jobs and another 250 indirect positions, expanding economic activity in Itacoatiara and strengthening Amazonas state’s role in Brazil’s export logistics chain for agricultural commodities.
Pier details
The floating pier is 240 meters long and 18 meters wide and is equipped with three electric Sennebogen 895E cranes, described as the largest in the world in their category and the first of their kind to operate in the Southern Hemisphere. The equipment has operating capacity of up to 2,100 tonnes per hour.
The structure will also allow the simultaneous berthing of one Panamax vessel of up to 50,000 tonnes and six barges, with operations expected to be completed within 36 hours, reducing logistics bottlenecks and increasing operational predictability for trading companies and operators in the agricultural sector.
Beyond the capacity gain, Super Porto Verde reinforces the company’s strategy of linking logistics expansion to a sustainability agenda. Waterway transport is considered one of the lowest-carbon alternatives for large-scale cargo transport, especially over long distances. “We are ready to deliver a technological, sustainable and efficient operation that will expand the alternatives for shipping Brazil’s agricultural production,” the executive added.
