Week 202624

In May 2026, Uruguay’s dairy sector experienced its best export month, with Africa emerging as a significant market, accounting for 43% of total exports and showing a 26% year-on-year growth. Notable African countries such as Algeria, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Mauritania were key buyers, each purchasing around $3 million worth of products. Mauritania, in particular, paid the highest price for whole milk powder at $3,870 per ton.

Venezuela re-entered the market as a buyer, acquiring approximately 550 tons of dairy products, a development closely monitored by the industry due to the country’s historically unpredictable purchasing patterns.

The international average price for Uruguayan dairy exports saw a rebound in May, rising to $3,710 per ton from a low of $3,550 in April. Whole milk powder, a primary export product, reached $3,720 per ton, reflecting a recovery from prior price volatility and a downward correction in Global Dairy Trade auctions in April.

Despite the strong performance in May, the sector has not yet matched the export growth rate of 2025, which saw a 14% increase. Whole milk powder remains the cornerstone of Uruguay’s export portfolio, with butter also showing sustained growth in both volume and value.

The outlook for the second half of the year will largely depend on international price trends, Brazilian demand, and climatic impacts on regional production. With global milk supply growth remaining modest, the Uruguayan dairy industry aims to leverage international opportunities to maintain prices and strengthen market positions.
