Uruguay’s National Ports Administration (ANP) has signed a concession agreement with the winning consortium to install a new floating dock at the Capurro fishing terminal in the Port of Montevideo. The project is expected to turn the terminal into an internationally competitive ship repair hub and involves an investment of $20 million.

The agreement was signed with Christophersen SA and Rimader SA.

“This gives us the opportunity to secure vital infrastructure for ship repairs. It is a valuable service for the country because it creates jobs,” ANP President Pablo Genta said.

According to Genta, around 500 international and Uruguayan fishing vessels operate in the South Atlantic each year. A floating dock in Montevideo would allow these fleets to undergo maintenance without having to travel to Argentina or South Africa.

Through the concession, ANP aims to establish the Capurro terminal as an international center for the shipbuilding and repair industry, with an emphasis on safety, efficiency and environmental protection. Operations are scheduled to begin by the end of 2027.

Genta said the concession will run for 30 years, with the possibility of renewal. The business plan, including facilities and equipment, calls for an investment of approximately $20 million.

The new floating dock will provide repair services for vessels weighing between 9,000 and 10,000 metric tons and will be able to accommodate as many as five vessels at a time. The facility will also feature two 20-metric-ton cranes with a reach of 12 meters.
