Sudan Opens Market to More Brazilian Agricultural Products

Sudan’s sanitary authority has formally approved imports of an additional range of Brazilian agricultural products. The decision opens new markets for Brazilian producers in the African country, covering day-old birds, hatching eggs, and meat, meat products and offal from poultry, cattle and goats. The agreement also covers trade in live cattle and buffalo for breeding, as well as cattle and buffalo embryos produced in vitro and in vivo.
The opening comes at a sensitive time for Brazil’s poultry industry, following confirmation of a Newcastle disease outbreak at a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina. The case prompted five trading partners to impose temporary restrictions on Brazilian poultry exports.
Malaysia and Mexico suspended imports from all of Brazil, affecting products such as live poultry, meat, offal, hatching eggs and chicks. Saudi Arabia, China and Chile limited their suspensions to the state of Santa Catarina, affecting items such as poultry meat, hatching eggs, eggs for human consumption and breeding birds.
