Localfrio breaks import record at Itajaí terminal

Localfrio reported record imports at its Itajaí bonded terminal (SC). In January of this year, 1,353 containers were processed there, setting yet another record for a Localfrio terminal.

Wines, tires, dental products, machines, and solar panels were some of the goods imported in the period. The volume recorded in January represented an increase of 141% compared to the same month of the previous year when only 560 containers were processed. With this increase, Localfrio’s market share in the port of Itajaí more than doubled in the period.

In Itajaí, recorded volumes were 1130 units in December and 11740 for the whole year. Through these results, Localfrio scored gains both in volume (19.5%) and in terms of its participation share in the port (1.4 percentage points) compared to December 2021.

Some factors have driven the search for space in Localfrio’s terminals. Special customs regimes applied to the warehouse, for example, make the terminal stand out as importers can fractionally clear their loads depending on the demand.

In addition, the special regime allows goods to be stored for up to two years with a total suspension of taxes, with the possibility of re-export to other countries.

Another factor that has stimulated the search for storage at Localfrio’s terminals is the increase in demurrage (fee charged by shipowners for delays in returning containers). Demurrage fees can strongly impact import costs.

Localfrio is the only company in the sector with bonded terminals located in the country’s main maritime foreign trade hubs (Santos, Suape, and Itajaí). The company also stands out for owning the only refrigerated bonded terminal in the Port of Santos.
