African Swine Fever reaches war-torn Russia, Ukraine

On Monday, August 28th, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reported new cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Russia and Ukraine, two countries engaged in a conflict for over a year and a half. The cases were confirmed on August 24th.

The OIE revealed that the disease was identified in the Russian territory of Plotava, located in the Kursk administrative region. Eight domestic breeding animals were tested and yielded positive results. Unfortunately, all of them perished. The last case reported in the country had been on February 17th.

In the Ukrainian territory, the episode of African Swine Fever was detected on a farm in Rivnynne, situated in the Vinnytsya administrative region. Out of 831 susceptible animals, 25 tested positive for the virus and died.

In both instances, the World Organization for Animal Health stated that containment measures have been implemented, including disinfection of affected areas, monitoring of wildlife reserves, control of animal movement, quarantine, and surveillance in restricted zones.

African Swine Fever is recognized as one of the most significant threats to global pig farming. Caused by a virus, it can infect both wild and domestic animals, with a high potential for fatality, consequently leading to substantial losses within commercial herds.
