Alckmin: Export Quota Among Options in U.S. Trade Talks

The acting President of Brazil and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin, stated that the adoption of an export quota is one of the options on the table in trade negotiations with the United States, which recently imposed a 25% tariff on Brazilian steel and aluminum.

“I had a conversation with U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), Jamieson Greer. One of the ideas is to establish a quota. Previously, there was an 18% tariff, but up to a certain volume, there was a quota in place. These negotiations are ongoing, and we are advocating for a win-win approach, making the most of available opportunities,” said Alckmin, who participated via videoconference in the “Rumos 2025” event, organized by Valor at the Rosewood Hotel in São Paulo.

The Vice President expressed his regret over the U.S. decision to raise tariffs on Brazilian exports, noting that the United States maintains a trade surplus with Brazil in both services (USD 18 billion) and goods (USD 7 billion). “Among the ten most-exported products to the U.S., eight are subject to zero tariffs,” he emphasized.
