Antaq clears second port project in Arroio do Sal, plan moves to ministry review

The Federal Official Gazette last Thursday (4) published authorization from the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq) for a second port project in Arroio do Sal. The proposal had already been presented to Antaq on another occasion but had not progressed due to pending requests. This is considered one of the first stages; subsequent approval by the Ministry of Ports and Airports will still be required.
The project, named Porto Litoral Norte, is initially designed in an “L” shape. This second model under review has an estimated value similar to the first, at R$5 billion. In addition, the terminal would be of the offshore type, built in open sea, whereas the other is planned for coastal construction. One of the distinguishing features would be its depth of around 30 meters, compared to 17 meters for the Porto Meridional project. This factor would enable even larger vessels to dock at the facility.
The proposal comes from Doha Investimentos e Participações, a Porto Alegre-based company formed by investors who split from the Porto Meridional project. In addition to the offshore area to be occupied, this project involves 150 hectares in the Arroio Seco resort area to host the industrial complex and passenger terminal. Access would be facilitated by a viaduct and the BR-101 highway.
The planned distance between the two ports, should both move forward, is five kilometers, with Porto Litoral Norte located to the north of Porto Meridional. The structure of this second option is designed to handle 23,400 containers, with a potential annual throughput of 43.9 million tonnes.
